Gloria Riley was one of the parents that
attended UACF’s Educate, Equip and Support: Building Hope –
Juvenile Justice training in Oakland February of this year.
This new curriculum provides parents and caregivers with an
understanding of the complexities and importance of becoming
actively involved in advocating for appropriate services and
treatment of family members with juvenile justice
involvement.
Here is her story…
I went to the
training regarding the Juvenile Justice System with UAFC
about 3 months before my son's court date. As a result of
the training, I felt empowered as a parent. I learned
that I have a voice to advocate for my child. The training
was very good. I no longer felt that I was alone because the
wonderful trainers had gone through it themselves, so they
not only trained from the material but they trained from
their experience. WOW! It was great and because of the
training, I am able to share with other parents and help
them to know that they are not alone. Now with all the help
from the training and my support system my son is no longer
involved in the Juvenile Justice System. He is totally off
probation, still in school and doing great; he also has a
part time job and has a desire to stay out of trouble. Had I
not known how to advocate for my child I don't know where
this might have ended up. Thanks and please keep getting the
word out to all parents.
